3,838

On Thursday evening I was stuck in a featureless hotel room in Somerset with a laptop and no internet connection. Writers among you will know that these are propitious circumstances for work, and I spent a couple of hours knocking out the first thousand words of the new Mondia story. Once back home I spent some time over the weekend polishing further. The result is the first 3,838 words of the new Mondia novel, now provisionally entitled The Fall of the Fireduke.

The first scene works relatively well, the subsequent ones less so, but at this point that is neither here nor there. What is important is that there are words on the page and characters going about their business.

I know this is a disappointment for those who wanted to see War of the Midget Trolls, but I'm hoping my readership will bear their disappointment with fortitude...

Fall of the Fireduke... hah! I have lulled you into the trap of alliteration! I feel better about my problem in that area now.

It's a good title. I want to read it now. Hurry up and write it please.

I've never seen the problem with alliteration - I think it makes for a zingy title.

There are some strange old rules out there...

In fact I concerned myself far more with Fireduke, Fire-Duke or Fire Duke. I like hyphens but it's probably too old-fashioned in this context.

I like it all as one word too.

I think one word is the best option--at least partly because it makes the alliteration visual as well as aural.

As someone who has fallen for the Mondia universe, this is cause for celebration... Though will you permit me just one tear for the loss of "...Midget Trolls" and a potentially diminutive epic?

That's a great title, Tim - and it's great that you're launched on a new Mondia novel. Here's to it (imagine a glass of bubbly being raised...)

Matt, maybe it's bet to think of the Midget Trolls as not dead, merely sleeping...

Thanks Alis!

The title's growing on me. It encapsulates very neatly what the book's about - too neatly, perhaps.
